Current Wii market still has room for growth

Next generation Nintendo console hardware remains one of the more persistent rumors at this point in the Wii's life cycle, and it's one which the company has little qualms of quashing for the time being. Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing, maintains that her company simply has no plans to release a Wii successor in the near future.

Speaking to GameSpot, Dunaway explains that Nintendo is expecting still more growth from the current Wii market, already much larger than the PlayStation 2's impressive installed base during a similar point in its lifecycle. According to Dunaway, the Wii installed base currently sits at 67 million users worldwide, with 27 million in the US alone.

Nintendo will certainly showcase new console hardware, when the time is right. That's the word straight from the fish's mouth concerning new Nintendo consoles, but it's probably what you expected to hear anyways. More interesting then is what success third party companies might be having on the Wii, a platform still dominated by successful first party software.

Nintendo of America's business development chief Dan Adelman confirms that 76 Wii games have hit over one million units in sales. Of these million sellers, 54 were in fact released by third parties while the remainder were attributed to Nintendo's own offerings. Additionally, Dunaway reaffirms her company's commitment to third party publishers.
